What Is Endometriosis And What Causes it?
To understand endometriosis, it is better to look at where the term has been derived from. First, the term “endo” means inside and “metra” is womb. Together, these terms refer to a medical condition of women wherein an abnormality occurs in the womb. Endometriosis happens when endometrial cells (cells that are supposed to be distributed inside the uterus) rather grow outside the uterus.
Endometriosis occurs in roughly five to ten percent of women according to Medical studies in the United States. Endometriosis happens as early as the menstrual cycle and could last until the stage of reproduction and can inhibit reproduction.
Endometriosis symptoms can include pelvic pain and abnormal signs of infertility. Pains brought about by this disorder also vary and could take the form of the following: dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, and dysuria. Among all these, most women are familiar with dysmenorrhea, and more often than not, disregard it as a normal symptom during the onset of monthly period.
However, doctors advise not to take these symptoms for granted, especially when they occur with unbearable pain. These, they say, could be the start of more chronic endometriosis.
Endometriosis can also cause several complications. These can be internal scarring, adhesions, and more serious ones like the development of different cysts like pelvic, chocolate, or ruptured cysts.
Women should educate themselves on the causes of endometriosis in order lower their risk of serious side affects. Sometimes, this is caused by retrograde menstruation. Retrograde menstruation happens when during a menstrual period, endometrial wastes exit through the fallopian tube and infect the linings of the fallopian cavity tissues that trigger the development of more serious states of endometriosis.
Knowing family health history is important endometriosis can be passed through generations from mother to daughter.. But the more important one to tackle would be another potential cause, which is estrogen. It is necessary for women to maintain their estrogen at low levels since an excessive amount of this can prompt such disease.
Of course this disease has already captured the attention of experts and we are fortunate to know that there are available treatments and medications to prevent endometriosis. For women who are still in the reproductive years, the treatment provided is usually through the prevention of pain and restriction of the progression of the disorder. However, for those who suffer from chronic endometriosis, a surgical procedure is usually recommended.
