Children usually have their nightmares. Since they have a very imaginative mind, they usually create something out of their nightmares and they would see these things as real. The fear will slowly devour them and they would scream every night as if the nightmare is real. This is a typical reaction of a child but it is not suppose to be this way. In fact if it is not handled immediately, panic attacks will hunt the child every night.
Your child’s fear after watching a horror movie may be accelerated if he is left in his room alone and in total darkness. Yes, you can put him to sleep however he may wake up at the middle of the night and cry in terror. He will start to sweat, feel cold, and his heart will beat rapidly. His imagination will start to trick him and his fear will start to devour him. He is now having a panic attack.
As parents, we must understand that children need to cope up first before they are left alone. Our children have to learn independency or else they will suffer from constant panic attack. Keep in mind that we should never force a child to cope with darkness. Slowly introduce him into the dark that it is a friend. Otherwise, the child will get hyperventilated every time he is in the dark.
In addition, don’t let your child eat unhealthy foods. These foods do not contain enough essential nutrients to make his brain function properly. Give him only the best and assure that the foods he eats are highly nutritious. Also, keep in mind that there are foods that should be avoided before sleeping. These foods are heavy for the tummy and some people believe that they might cause nightmares.
Furthermore, we shouldn’t contribute to our children’s anxiety. It is never a good idea to threaten the children with monster in the closet and under the bed.
If the child is still hunted by panic attacks, it is wise to seek medical advice as soon as possible. Probably, the child is suffering from something more. Keep in mind that the child’s sleep is at stake here and if he can’t have enough sleep, his stress level will fluctuate dramatically.
