This caused the return of harvest and fertility to the earth.

But Persephone was deeply in love with her husband Hades and Zeus allowed her to spend half her time with her husband. So it happens that winter settles on earth when Persephone leaves to reunite with her husband and the season of growth and harvest returns when she returns to Demeter. So Virgo is shown holding two sheaths of wheat in her hands, symbolizing harvest. One sheath is denoted by Spica, the bright star of the Virgo constellation. Spica is the ear of wheat in Latin.
